How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT (and Avoid a Fail)

How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT (and Avoid a Fail)

It’s that time again - your car’s due for its MOT. But before you drop it off at P&L Haile in Wigton, there are a few simple things you can check to improve your chances of passing first time. Here’s our guide to getting MOT-ready and avoiding common failures.

What’s Checked in an MOT?

The MOT focuses on safety, environmental standards, and roadworthiness. It doesn’t cover the engine or clutch, but key areas include:

  • Brakes and tyres
  • Suspension and steering
  • Lights and indicators
  • Wipers, washers, and windscreen
  • Seatbelts, horn, and mirrors
  • Exhaust emissions
  • Bodywork and number plates

Pre-MOT Checklist: What You Can Do at Home

1. Test All Lights

Ask someone to help you check your headlights, brake lights, indicators, and rear number plate light. Replace any bulbs that have blown.

2. Check Tyre Tread and Condition

Tyres should have at least 1.6mm tread depth across the central three-quarters. Use a 20p coin to check — if the outer band is visible, it’s time to replace them.

3. Top Up Screenwash

A surprising number of cars fail for having an empty washer bottle. Make sure it’s full and the jets are spraying properly.

4. Inspect Wipers and Windscreen

Wiper blades should clear the screen without smearing. Any windscreen chips larger than 10mm in the driver’s view could result in a fail.

5. Seatbelts and Warning Lights

Check seatbelts for fraying and test they retract properly. If any warning lights are on — particularly the airbag or engine light — get it checked before the MOT.

Common Reasons for MOT Failure

  • Blown bulbs
  • Worn tyres
  • Low washer fluid
  • Faulty wipers
  • Dashboard warning lights

These issues are easy to fix — and often cheaper when done before the test. At P&L Haile, we’re always happy to give your vehicle a pre-MOT check if you’re unsure.

What Happens If You Fail?

If your vehicle fails, we’ll explain exactly why and what needs to be done. We offer fair repair prices and a free retest if the repairs are carried out by us within 10 working days.
